Property Description: SITUATION AND DESCRIPTION
The history of Rowden Court goes back to the 1870's when Lord Revelstoke, formerly Edward Baring of the Baring Brothers Bank, lavished money on his Membland Hall estate, being some 4,000 acres of the lovely South Hams countryside centred on his Jacobean mansion at Membland. It included a coastal 10 mile carriage drive for his wife, Louisa, along which delightful walks can still be enjoyed. Access to this popular walk is a short distance from the property. Lord Revelstoke is believed to have instructed Piers St. Aubyn as his architect, and his style is to be seen in the many examples of his architecture that still exist. The use of local stone and the exposed rafter ends immediately identify the properties he designed. He did not limit his work to houses. He designed the village church and school and all the service buildings to the estate. Rowden Court was originally an outstanding range of barns and it is to preserve their architectural merit that permission was granted to convert them. The conversion of the barns was carried out in the late 1980s.
The properties have consent for full residential use and so can be used either as holiday accommodation or as permanent homes. Owners living out of the area can benefit from the maintenance of the communal areas being overseen by the Management Company which is run by all the owners. The whole complex lies within several acres of lawns and landscaped gardens including a tennis court, barbecue area and ample car parking.
The property is located high in farmland only half a mile from the sea with splendid cliffs, coast path, cove beach, and only half a mile from the beautifully picturesque boating villages of Noss Mayo and Newton Ferrers. The twin villages of Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo enjoy a delightful riverside setting on the wooded slopes of the estuary of the River Yealm. This sheltered, deep water mooring is much favoured by yachtsmen and a truly beautiful valley within the unspoilt South Hams countryside, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The villages share a number of facilities including a post office, pharmacy, traditional butchers, Co-operative stores, three good public houses, two churches, yacht club with bistro and good Primary School. Bus services run to Plymouth city centre which is within easy commuting distance. The main route from Plymouth to Exeter (A38/M5 Devon Expressway) is only a few miles away. Intercity trains run daily from Plymouth to Paddington. Plymouth Continental Ferryport are also easily accessible. All combine to give superb access to the rest of the country, combined with living in one of the most beautiful riverside locations on the south coast. Plymouth itself is an historic and vibrant waterside City, well provided with colleges, grammar and public schools, modern university, the Peninsula Medical School, Theatre Royal and cinemas, large department stores, cafes, bistros and restaurants. The leisure facilities are outstanding with superb watersports in and around Plymouth Sound. ACCOMMODATION
